Bifold doors have become increasingly popular over the past few years and those who decide to invest in these doors for their home likely understand that more often than not, doors need to be glazed effectively to get the most out of them. One of the main reasons for the current popularity of bifold doors is the impact on the amount of light they can bring into the home and how much larger and more open they can make a space look. But without effective glazing in your bifold doors, many  of these benefits would be lost.

What type of glazing is used for bifold doors?

Glazing is as much about style as it is about safety and security naturally, but the first question you should consider is whether you want double glazed bifold doors or triple glazed bifold doors. Single glazing isn’t really considered as an option with modern bifold door designs.

Double glazing

All modern bifold doors are delivered with toughened safety glass as standard, but double glazing is even safer and more secure, as two panes are clearly harder to break than one single pane. Also, the space between the panes acts as an added layer of insulation which creates greater thermal resistance that will keep your property warmer in the winter months and cooler in the summer. This will mean less reliance on your heating and air conditioning and as a result a significant saving in your energy bill. Double glazing is not only energy efficient but has the additional benefit of minimising noise.

Sealed double glazing can reduce medium and high frequencies such as a human voice, and thicker glass will improve sound reduction even more. Therefore, you should seriously consider the thickness of your glass as well as the amount of space between the panes. The space can range between 6mm and 20mm, with a minimum space of 12mm being the recommended for optimal thermal performance and noise reduction.

However, if noise is a key issue for you – for example, if you live in a bustling city, or close to an airport or train station – to achieve even better noise control and reduce low frequency noises like traffic and trains, the optimum recommended air gap is 150mm or over. Keep in mind though that such large gaps will allow convection to occur between the panes which can reduce insulation.

Double glazing is the mostly commonly chosen and affordable option. With a secure seal between the two panels, you’ll have years of service where the windows remain air-tight and free from condensation and require little or no maintenance.

Triple glazing

Triple glazing and high-performance coatings in your bifold doors will improve your home’s thermal efficiency even further and can make the additional cost worth it in the long term. Triple glazed bifold doors typically have a U value of about 0.8, whereas double glazed bifold doors will have a U value of between 1.2 and 1.4. The better-insulated a door and its glazing is, the lower the U-value will be.

Triple glazing is an option for all areas but particularly those that experience the harsher elements of the UK weather on a more consistent basis. It is a matter of personal preference whether you opt to invest further in the additional benefits of triple glazing.

Double glazing in your bifold doors will make your home instantly more comfortable, but triple glazing will take it one step further. If your home gets particularly cold or your area is more prone to bad weather, triple glazing might be a better option for you, but double glazing is also very effective and is the popular option and more preferable for those who have a stricter budget.

In terms of design there are multiple options available whether you decide to go for double or triple glazing for your bifold doors. There are plenty of styles available to suit all types of homes, from simple glazed frames to those with panes subdivided into smaller panes by vertical and horizontal glazing bars, leaded lights, and panelling.

Alternatively, if you have specific ideas in mind, at UK Doors Online we offer a bespoke design service. So, you can have your bifold doors made and glazed to match the existing glazing in your home and end up with new bifold doors that match exactly the existing windows currently installed in the rest of your property.
